The initiative of Rev. Michael Kolbuch, a LaSalette Missionary,
and the devotedness and concern of the pastor, the Rev. Oswald
Loretan, for the spiritual and intellectual development of
the youth, gave root for setting the groundwork and the establishment
of a parish school in the basement of St. Mary’s Church.
On the ninth of September, 1924, the first group of Sisters,
namely, Sister Mary Teresa, Sister Mary Dominic and Sister
Mary Raphael, of the Daughters of Mary of the Immaculate
Conception from New Britain, Connecticut, were commissioned
by Mother Mary Colette to undertake the task of educating
the children of St. Mary’s Parish.
Their noble labors began on the tenth of September when
137 children registered either for the first or second grade.
Each year another grade was added as the children advanced.
In June, 1931, the first eighth graders received their diplomas
as graduates of St.Mary’s School.
From 1924 to1960, the school thrived in spite of congested
basement space and double grades. Increasing enrollment necessitated
additional Teachers.
On September 11, 1959, groundbreaking ceremonies were held
for the new school to be built across the street from the
Church. The new school was quite a transformation from the
original church-basement school. This new and attractive
edifice was built and dedicated to fashion the intellectual
and moral growth of the parish youth. On September, 1960,
two hundred fifty two Students were welcomed. Teachers and
Students enjoyed their new facility and modern equipment.
Children from other local parishes and towns began applying
for admission to St.Mary’s. The school continued changing
with the times and added its first lay Teacher to the faculty
in 1967. Tuition was charged beginning in 1982.
Today, 82 years later, St.Mary’s faculty & staff
consist of 9 full-time Teachers, (lay and religious) 5 part
time Teachers, a Secretary, Principal and 2 aides. A
nurse is also part of the staff but funded by the Town
of Ware. A strong academic program
is enhanced with up-to-date technology and modern textbooks
and supplementary materials. Religion continues to be the
foundation on which all else is built.
The Students presently enjoy their lunches in the new parish
hall (under the church), the former site of the old school.
The convent is home to a fully equipped computer room and
science lab.
St.Mary’s School is very fortunate to have the support
and backing of the entire parish. All the organizations contribute
to the support and improvement of the school. Because of
our history, many of our Students are already second and
third generations and this trend appears to continue.
Over 1,750 Students have graduated from the school in its
82 year history. Faith, love and sacrifice
have realized the dream of our founders.
